Rev. Fr. Jose Alencherry was born on August 3, 1942 in an ancient farmer family of Alencherry in Thuruthy village, as the fifth son of Philipose and Mariamma. On completion of primary education in local schools in the village, he continued his education  and graduated from St. Berchmans High School, Changanacherry in 1959.  He joined the Minor Seminary at Parel, Changanacherry. Simulteneously, he was studying at St. Berchmans College, Changanacherry for Pre-University Courses.  Having completed the Pre-University Course in first class and also the Minor Seminary training, Fr. Jose Alencherry continued his studies at the St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary Vadavathur and was ordained on Dec 18, 1968 by Mar Mathew Kavuakattu, the Bishop of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry.  

Fr. Jose Alencherry started his priestly ministries at the Infant Jesus parish, Elikkulam followed by St. Joseph church, Perunna West. He pursued his academic education and gained B. A. in English Literature in first class and third rank from the University of Kerala. He went to the U.S.A. in 1974 and returned in 1978 with master's degree in Psychology and Councelling with second rank from the New York State University and master degree in English Literature with first rank from St. John's Univeristy, New York.  

He was appointed as the Director, the Family Apostolete of Changanacherry Archdiocese in June 1978 and continued to serve the families till June 1988.  During his tenure, he initiated family orgnisations such as Mathrujyothis and Pithruvedi and several other family apostolete ministries such as Marriage Preparation Course, Home Life Institute, Kudumbajyothis,  Rehabilitation Programme for Addicts, Marriage Enrichment Programmes, Marriage Aid Fund and Jyothis Councelling Centre.  These programmes have played a vital role in the renovation of the christian families and he was instrumental in starting similar programmes in South India particularly in the state of Kerala. 

When he was studying in the U.S.A, he served the parishes of St. Anns Church, Ossining and St Mary's Church, Yonkers, New York.  While he was the Director of Family Apostolete, he also served the parish St. Mary's Church Thuruthy as pastor.

During 1988-89, he served as the pastor of St. George Parish, Alappuzha and went to the U.S.A for Ph D in Family Councelling.  He obtained Doctor degree in Family Councelling from the reputed Barry University Florida with the first rank.  He also obtained Diploma in Alcoholic Councelling and Rehabilitation from the State Univeristy of Florida.    


He built the National Centre for Family Life Promotion (Cana) in Thuruthy and founded the Indian session of the John Paul-II Institute for Studies in Marriage & Family at the Cana.  He also founded the St. Jude Parish and St. Jude Mission Hospital at Yudapuram, Changanacherry.  In addition to the parish complex and the hospital, Fr. Jose Alencherry has built 10 houses for the poor families and has done a few humanitarian social activities.   

A scholar and teacher, Fr. Jose Alencherry, was a visiting professor in several seminaries and also at the John Paul - II Institute.  He wrote many books and articles on topics related to the family psychology and councelling.  'Kudumbavignaneeyam' (2 Vols), 'Alcaholism & Families', 'Family Apostolete', 'Family Councelling',  'Bio-ethical Issues & the Family', etc are some of his works. 


In 2002, he was awarded the Excellence Award and was chosen as the 'Best Pastor' in the Archdiocese of Changnacherry. In 2012, he received the 'Archdiocesan Award' for his contribution for the welfare of the families.  In 2014, he received 'Fr. Antony Kakkanattu Memorial Award' for his community services. Whatever he received in cash and kind, all have been contributed towards the improvement of the church. He believes that the space he occupied in the hearts of each and everyone who associated with him is the greatest award. 

Rev. Fr. Jose Alencherry celebrated the Golden Jubilee of his priesthood on Dec 18, 2018. 
On transfer from St. Jude Church Yudapuram on 15 May 2019, he left for Canada and took over his new venture as Director, Family Apostolete.
